The history of theatre is written in Florence’s DNA with two defining events: the birth of opera on October 6, 1600 and the construction of the first Italian-style theatre, Teatro della Pergola, in 1656. That’s over four uninterrupted centuries of performing arts and modern theatre! Today, the venue par excellence for opera is the contemporary Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, its acoustics its crown jewel. Teatro della Pergola, which has remained intact and active for over four centuries, hosts one of the most important theatre programs in Italy.
